Tips For Refinishing Your Wood Flooring

Jessie Bell

If you want to have your hardwood floor refinished and want to do the work on your own, it is vital that you are taking to time to learn about the following tips. This way, you will have a much better chance of ending up with a finished project that you are going to be proud of.

Be Careful Where You Start Sanding

After completely clearing out the room of any furniture or other items that would get in the way, you will want to look around for the best place to start the process of sanding. The best thing to do is to look for a spot in the room that is usually not very visible to people. For example, starting in a closet or in the location that you always have your bed is ideal. This way, you can begin the sanding process and will have become used to the sanding process by the time you make it over to more visible areas of the floor. Should you mess up a little in the beginning by going too rough with the sanding machine, it will not be noticed by others once everything is put back in the room.

Use Some Sample Stains

Before you apply stain to the entire floor, you might want to sample a few different shades or color of stain. This will help ensure that you are getting the best possible color for your personal taste. To do this, you will want to pick up a few small stain samples at the local home improvement or flooring store. One at a time, apply a little bit of the stain to the floor. You want to use just enough so you can really envision what the entire floor would look like once the stain has dried. Just make sure that you are applying the sample stains more towards the middle of the floor. This way, when it is time for you to sand down the colors that you are not interested in, you will not have to worry about sanding right next to the wall, as that can be hard to do at times.

Don't Apply The Polyurethane Too Soon

Too many people make the mistake of applying the coat of polyurethane too soon because they are anxious to have the job completed. It is important to allow at least a full eight hours for the stain to dry. Waiting will be worth it because the end result will be much better.

Should you find that refinishing the wood floors in your home is just simply too much for you to handle on your own, you can always call in a contractor. A professional flooring contractor like New York Hardwood Floors can give you the hard wood floors of your dreams in no time at all.
