Beyond Puddles: Other Signs Your Basement Needs Waterproofing

Jessie Bell

Many people assume that if they do not see puddles on their basement floor, they don't have a water problem and therefore don't need basement waterproofing services. Well, this could not be further from the truth. Few homes that benefit from basement waterproofing actually have puddling, pooling water. However, they do often show these other signs of excessive moisture in the basement.

Mold

If there is mold, there is definitely excess moisture. Mold cannot grow where it is dry. You might clean up the mold one day, but if it comes back a few days later, waterproofing your basement is likely the only way to get rid of it permanently. And you should seek to get rid of it permanently since mold can cause all sorts of health problems.

Water Stains

It's not uncommon for water to leak in through a crack but then dribble off down the side of a wall and into another crack before you see it. However, what you will see are the streaks it leaves behind. These streaks tend to be dark gray or black in color. If your water has a really high mineral content and the little leaks have been happening for a while, you might see white streaks due to mineral accumulation.

Musty Odors

If a basement is too moist, it will usually have a musty odor. This may remind you of the odor a towel gets when it does not dry thoroughly after use. What you are smelling could be hidden mold or mildew, or it could just be small amounts of mold or mildew growing on the floors and in corners. If you store something in the basement, it will probably take on this unwanted musty odor, too.

Warped Building Materials

Take a look at any of the porous building materials in the basement. This includes the drywall, any flooring, and even ceilings. Do some of the building materials appear to be warped or bent? This is likely because they have become moist and then dried out repeatedly. Having the basement waterproofed will not fix these damaged materials, but it will keep additional materials from being similarly damaged.

If you notice any of the signs above, you need to have a basement waterproofing team come take a look at your basement. Even if there are not puddles, you almost certainly have a moisture problem that needs to be dealt with.

When I started looking for someone to build my dream home, I realized that I was going to need to be very picky about how I wanted things to proceed. I started looking everywhere for just the right people, and I was really impressed with one team that stood out to me. They built an absolutely breathtaking home for us, and I know that it might not have worked out that way had we worked with different people. This blog is all about interviewing contractors.
